CHRISTMAS AT ORCHARD (DEC 2025)

By and large, Christmas in Singapore is predominantly about shopping, partying and getting together with friends, sometimes in certain occasions, lotsa drinking and eating. With Christmas light up in Orchard, and when the budget was sufficient to make Orchard looked very Christmasy, the crowds would be there to enjoy the Christmas vibes, not so much of appreciating the designs, or the atmosphere but to get a 'beautiful' pictures of themselves for social media. I saw someone simply took a pix and walked away almost instantaneously and not much of looking at the actual decoration. They would rather look at the pictures on their phones. Such is the modern society where digital impressions are more important than the actual experience itself. The irony of living in a modern digital age. Most of the time, we took so many pictures but we have no time to look at them too. Modern age - an age of hoarding and acquiring to feel good about ourselves.

Anyway, I did these sketches on-location but not joining the Urbansketchers Singapore people because I honestly, do not like crowds hence I chose to come by post Christmas when everyone was sleeping and resting from over partying. So it was a quiet morning and a overcast one. I sat under a shady spot to capture an angle of Ion Orchard that I have not done before. It was quite refreshing. Then I did another sketch of the street corner with the Christmas decor.

Without the lights coupled with an overcast sky, Christmas in Orchard seemed to look grey and grim, but that's the way I like it. LOL!

Wishing everyone a blessed Christmas and a Happy New Year 2026!
