Balinese umbrellas are quite unique. I notice most umbrellas are made multi-tiered. The most common are the ones with two "layers", while some are made with three. These umbrellas, usually quite colorful, are found decorating the temple compounds or used to shield the shrines or even the newly buried above the tombs. In the Balinese dialect, these umbrellas are known as "tedung", which means "to guard". According to resources, the colors of the umbrellas reflect the types of ceremonies that are taking place.
