Geylang Serai Malay Village and the festivity of Hari Raya

The sketchers came back to Geylang Serai again for their monthly sketchwalk. For some it was the second visit. Some weeks ago, we had an ad-hoc plein air session at the Malay Village Museum, and we felt we could come here again to sketch and cover areas we have not covered.

Paul who was the leader of this month's sketchwalk suggested we do thumbnail sketches at 2 locations. At each locations we would spend about 15mins drawing as many sketches as possible. These are the sketches I did over 2 locations. When my Lamy ran out of ink, I switched to using Hero. Technique wise, I was using continuous contour lines for some of the drawings, especially for the figures.

Then we were given 45mins to sketch or paint whatever we like. We could choose a thumbnail that we like and do up another more elaborate sketch back at that location. I completed my watercolor sketch/painting in about 40mins.

Capturing the festive mood of Hari Raya
Eventually we were at the junction between Joo Chiat Road and Changi Road to sketch the festivity of Hari Raya.
