Urban Sketching at Club Street for the "We Draw Singapore Together" event.

I was involved with "We Draw Singapore Together" event as an instructor alongside with some other urban sketchers. On the first day in the morning, I was co-teaching "Drawing People" with James Tan; in the afternoon I was the sketch leader for "Basic Watercolor" workshop taught by Erwin, who is also teaching in Ngee Ann Poly. When we dispersed the participants for the watercolour workshop to do their own things, some of them decided to tag behind to see how I sketched. This was the piece I did for them, using a gel pen and watercolour washes on newsprint sketchbook. The paper in this book is too absorbent and too fragile to used with watercolour but I got around it by using thicker paint and painting with quicker and gestural strokes, not working on the same spot for too long. In my composition I chose the long portrait format so that I could accommodate the towering palm trees in the foreground, which helped to framed up the entire sketch. I love the light that was falling on the building's facade so l left it white, and then further darken the cast shadows under the awning and within the building, thus creating a rhythm of light and shadow on the middle ground. I laid a thin wash of grey on the BG building just to increase slightly the contrast of the building with the sky. As the watercolour began to dry, i put in darker shadows to compensate the fading paint on this poor paper.
