This Chinese villa is located at No. 37 Kerbau Road and is named ‘Siew Song’, meaning elegant pine, which is believed to name after Tang Teng Niah’s wife, for whom the villa was built. It is an eight-room villa built in 1900 and has a hybrid of Chinese and European architectural styles according to the archives. The villa was rebuilt in the 1980s and won Singapore Institute of Architects Honourable Mention Award in 1991. It is now donned with a coat of psychedelic colors spanning all sides of the building including the ornamental designs. Today, Kerbau Road, where I sat and sketched this, is closed off and has been transformed into an open air or al fresco eatery, lined with plastic chairs and tables that mirrored the multi colors of the villa. If not for the archives, though the picture shown on the billboard was taken in 1983, I wouldn’t be able to imagine what it looked like in the past.
